Continuing with the N.E.W.Ts read-a-thon, I chose to read The Grownup by Gillian Flynn (the author best known for Gone Girl and Sharp Objects). This book counted for my “Exceeds Expectations” in Arithmancy because it ended on an even numbered page.

I first heard of this novella when I first signed up for the Book of the Month Club and received it as a free gift. Nifty! Despite its extremely short page count, I never actually got around to reading it. Oops… But now that has been rectified!

This little ghost story is strange, oh so strange, but also mind bending. It follows a woman who gives hand jobs and psychic readings for a living while she attempts to “help” (read: con money from) a woman with a problem in (with?) her house.

What I loved about this story is what I believe most people dislike about it: the ending. It was pretty darn creepy leading up to it, but I love short stories that have a twist right at the end that leaves the reader not actually knowing what is going on. Sometime’s it’s nice not having all of the answers, if done properly. And I felt like in this case it was! This was a fun little story!

Overall, 3.5/5 moose
