Why I Read
For as long as I can remember, I have loved two things: books and animals. These passions are more likely than not a result of my upbringing. My grandmothers were a librarian and a teacher, while my grandfather was a biology professor. I guess you could say I was doomed from the beginning. As a kid I practically lived at the library and I aspired to become “Shamu’s doctor.” Fast forward twenty odd years and not much has changed. My house is littered with stacks of books that must be navigated in order to acquire a snack and I am working towards my PhD in biology.
I am currently in school for my PhD. My dream is to graduate. One day. I swear I’ll get there. But what’s cool is I work with butterflies. You see, lady butterflies have teeth, in their you-know-what. That’s right. You totally just read that. I study it. I’m trying to figure out why the heck they have these things that resemble teeth (they actually chew), how they got them in the first place, and what exactly they are doing down there. It’s been a long process filled with ups and downs, but I’m glad I finally have time to get back to things I love (besides science), like reading!! Because science plays such a large role in my life, I enjoy reading books about science that are not written for scientists (my brain needs a break!)
My house is covered in a perpetual layer of fur. And this is no small layer like you see in the Swiffer or Pledge commercials. I mean, I can create life-size replicas of my animals. Currently, my menagerie consists of one adorably fluffy dog, three all-too-fluffy cats, six guinea pigs, and four leopard geckos (obviously the geckos are the largest perpetrators of fur pollution).
I like to think of myself as having a wide literary palate. If someone off the street hands me a book and tells me to read it, I will. In fact, this has happened to me before. My go to’s, however, focus around YA, suspense/mystery, popular science, and contemporary fiction. You will hopefully see me review a health mix of these. I try to finish a book every 10 days, and can’t wait to share some of my past favorites with you.
Sometimes I do other things besides read and study. I also cross stitch video game characters. (Shameless plug, my Etsy shop is pretty fantastic :-P). I also sleep, and make costumes, and other things as such.
But anyway, thanks for reading, that’s for checking out this blog, and I hope you find something you want to read!! I’m always looking for suggestions, so if you have a favorite, please let me know. Or you want me to check something out for you, I will sacrifice my safety to read an unknown literary piece.
All the best,
